The Dick Institute

The Dick Institute

Description:

Opened in 1901, the stunning Dick Institute features two contemporary art galleries with a regularly changing programme of nationally important exhibitions, and large museum displays of local and industrial history, fine art and natural sciences. Whilst Dean Castle is closed for restoration, the collections of arms, armour and musical instruments are on display here.

Part of the Recognised Collection of National Significance, the collection of historic musical instruments features lutes, guitars, harpsichords, recorders, pianos and harps and boasts one of the earliest violins in existence - an English Renaissance violin made by the Bassano family which dates from between 1550 and 1580.The significance and quality of some of the musical instruments has been compared to those found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
