Certificate of Good Character of William Burnes, 1752

Introduction:
William Burnes (1721-84), the father of Robert Burns was born in the Kincardine-shire area and was trained as a marker gardener, like his father before him. He travelled south seeking work and eventually settled in Alloway, Ayrshire. He married Agnes Broun and had 7 children.

Description:
In 1750 William Burnes arrived in Ayrshire and was employed by the Earl of Fairlie in the parish of Dundonald, being employed as a gardener. This certificate by the Kirk Session of Dundonald in 1752 testifies to the good character of William Burnes.
